WEEK 14
Words of Encouragement
“My son, if you accept
my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out
for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for
silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and
find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs
2:1-5

REVIEW: TIC TAC TOE!
We played a different game of TIC TAC TOE. The kids enjoyed it and did a great job answering the questions!
SENTENCE STRUCTURE
Cx: has an
independent clause and a subordinate clause.
I revisited
the two different clauses. (Purple and Green) We quickly talked through
Adverbial.
PURPOSE:
Imperative: What do we know about
the Imperative purpose? (Intro: Wk 4)
1. Imperative = command or request
2. You is the implied subject of
the imperative purpose.
3. 2nd person implied “you”
subject.
PATTERN: S-Vt-IO-DO
Indirect
Object = a noun or pronoun located between the transitive verb and the direct
object that tells to whom or for whom the action is done and who is receiving
the direct object.
**
A sentence will not have an IO without a DO. **
**
The transitive verb only transfers action to DO, not IO.**
**
Indirect Objects ALWAYS come between the verb and the DO. **
NEW GRAMMAR: One more new concept to cover!
P.O.S.: VERBS VOICE (ACTIVE AND PASSIVE)
Remember on the verb or the heart chart, there is an
attribute called VOICE. In the picture, there is a big speech bubble. Anyone
remember what was in the bubble?
What
does voice mean? Voice is the way a verb
functions relative to the subject of the sentence. Review chart DD (Verb Anatomy-Passive). We looked over over and discussed.
|
ACTIVE
VOICE = The
Subject Acts.
|
PASSIVE
VOICE = The
subject is acted upon.
|
In
order to change a sentence from active to passive, we need to do a few things.
- A helping verb in the form of ‘to be’
must be used (to be, am, are, is, was, were, be, being, been)
- The original verb becomes a past
participle. (a past participle is a verb plus -ed used as an adjective or
verb.)
- If the sentence has a direct object, it will become the subject
If
you look at chart DD, there are more sentences in passive voice. This is
somewhat deep water material. But it is OKAY, you have all tread water and have
the strength to tread.
Action verbs are
always best. But sometimes passive can be useful.
The judicial
system- The milk was spilt, Medical transcripts, Scientific
Writing.
In writing,
it can serve a great purpose.
1. Want
to show sympathy to the subject.
The tornado demolished the town. The town was
demolished by the tornado.
The deer was hit by a car. The car hit the deer.
2. For
the element of surprise.
Mrs. Strickland was defeated by the Essentials students
in a game of Chart Wars. VERSUS The Essentials students defeated Mrs.
Strickland in a game of Chart Wars.
DIALECTIC: We fleshed out the COMBO OF 3:
We put these three
combinations together to write a few sentences.
#1: Dictate
sentence.
#2: Check
Mechanics.
#3: Question
confirmation.
#4: Diagram
Sentences.
I noticed that we have a room of students who are at all different levels with diagramming. The chief goal is that
PARENTS- DO NOT GIVE UP ON FLESHING OUT THESE SENTENCES. This is the essence
of the dialectic phase.
MATH
Mental
Math: Did a few strings from our friends. We are settling into
this routine just nicely.

REVIEW:
STYLE:
We took time to review ALL stylistic techniques using our own
personal style. 😊 We then went over #2 and #3 Sentence Openers.
STRUCTURE: We went over everyone's paragraph. After that we recapped what summarizing multiple references and
fusing was. THEN I took a moment to roll out the 5 Canons of Rhetoric and how that ties in to IEW and Challenge Years. We are using the classical tools to think and communicate. This skill will take us far!!
